Simple Serenity

In February’s InStyle magazine, L.A. Interior Designer (and White House decorator) Michael S. Smith revealed his tricks on how to make a space look both tranquil and elegant. We loved his ideas! Creating a serene room is simple with I.O. METRO pieces and his 5 Tips!

1. USE LESS FURNITURE- “Editing down the contents of a room can quickly make it feel much calmer. Go piece by piece and ask: Does this item contribute style, functionality or simply clutter? Eliminate the latter.”

2. CHOOSE RESTFUL HUES- “In my work I use shades of blue and green—there is nothing as peaceful as a pale room. Limit the palette to two or three low-contrast hues (ones with a similar intensity) throughout the space (walls, furniture, objects).”

3. INTRODUCE SYMMETRY- “Pairs of tables, lamps or chairs provide a visual order that feels chic yet relaxed.”

4. SELECT SOFT, TEXTURAL FABRICS- “Opt for low-contrast patterns or single colors in rich surfaces. Texture alone can create a sense of variation, and transform a room into a subtly layered space.”

5. RELY ON NATURAL MATERIALS- “From bamboo, to sisal and wicker, décor that is derived from nature has its own laid-back appeal.”
