Gray, the New Brown

Now that Gray is the New Brown, people have lots of questions about how to update their classic Brown Sofas & Sectionals.

“I get a lot of emails asking... What do you do to make your brown sofa look more current? Can you introduce gray walls? What about all the bright and happy colors, how do you bring those in? Well, here are three tips to help bring your brown sofa into 2011…”

1. INTRODUCE LOTS OF WHITE OR CREAM

“The sisal rug has been layered with the black and white zebra (you can do the same thing over your beige carpet). Just picture this with any cream/white or black and white rug. The introduction of white in any form helps freshen the look.” Please note that you cannot just add one white item. The color must be repeated throughout the room with accessories.

2. REPEAT THE GRAY

“If your living room is all brown, butterscotch and beige tones, painting the walls gray is not enough to pull the look together. You must repeat the gray, like with this pillow below or with an area rug that incorporates the warmer tones in addition to gray.”

3. ADD BRIGHT COLORS

"If you have wall to wall carpet that doesn’t coordinate at all with grays or the bright colors you want to introduce, buy a large solid colored rug to cover it up. Then you can add the fresh greens, raspberrys, turquoise, and yellows to bring happiness to your space.” Bottom line, bright colors need white to bring them to life. Black and gray are the crisp neutrals that work best with bright colors.
