Cheerio

Since all eyes will be on the opening ceremonies in London tonight, we thought it was highly appropriate to highlight our favorite British designer. When you think British design style, your mind probably goes right to the overly traditional and regal themes of places like Buckingham Palace. Stop right there! We like to think that Kate would use our favorite Brit, Kelly Hoppen, to decorate her modern castle... (I mean, hello, Victoria Beckham already did).

KELLY'S HOUSE RULES

• Create balance on mantelpieces and other surfaces by juxtaposing one overscaled object with two or three miniature ones.

• Beware color as classic Kelly is a yin-yang scheme of dark and pale, using a palette of neutral colors and contrasting textures.

• Mix old and new antique and vintage, against the clean lines of stark contemporary pieces.

• Introduce texture as without it, a neutral scheme will look flat and dead.

• Start with linen as your first choice of fabric: without it, a scheme will never feel quite right.

• Unblock energy within the home using crystals, color, candles, music and chain-mail curtains made of small metal balls.

• Create symmetry, if a fireplace is off-center in a room, make sure you line the sofa up with it.

• Create a plan, keeping in mind the function of the room and the storage
needs. A well-planned clutter-free room is the starting point for everything decorative.

• Use taupes and cream, adding metallic and brightly hued accessories.

• Layer textures, sticking to a monochromatic palette. Sofas and chairs upholstered in suede and velvet look great together. Upping the texture factor is as easy as adding chenille and silk pillows and throws.

• Introduce the unexpected. "I love circular pieces right now," says Kelly, who also likes interesting doors.
