Dining Room Do's

We love the old saying, "The fondest memories are made when gathered around the table." Your dining room is the space in which you entertain guests, and celebrate life's milestone events and cherished holidays. This room is special, so don't just haphazardly select your all important dining table. You should really put some thought into creating a warm, inviting, and practical dining room. I.O. METRO has a dining table for every decorating taste, but before you can select your table there are some rules you need to know...

MEASURE WELL. It is really important to measure the size of the dining room, BEFORE you go shopping, because there is nothing worse than falling in love with something that is too small or large. The shape of your room will also dictate your table. For example, don't put a rectangular table in a square room. You want a round or square table instead.

SIZE MATTERS. Once you know the size of the space you can then determine the scale of the table that is appropriate. No one likes to make people scoot in their chairs to try and squeeze by just to get to or from their place setting. A good rule of thumb is to allow 36" of space between your table and the walls to allow for walking and scooting chairs out.

PERSONAL SPACE. It's always embarrassing when you're knocking elbows with your neighbor. Remember that people usually need a 22"x14" area of personal space for dining comfortably. So don't try to squeeze too many chairs around the table.

SHAPE UP. The configuration of your table should go along with your space and dining needs. For more intimate, small settings select a square table. If you're looking to seat a larger crowd and have more space, a rectangular table is the best way to maximize your seating capabilities. If it's important to you that everyone be able to see each other to foster conversation, then a round table is the way to go.

TOP IT OFF. Once you know the size and shape you desire, it's time to select your tabletop finish. Your decorating style and lifestyle needs should dictate what you select. No matter your specific criteria, I.O. METRO has you covered with reclaimed, distressed and polished woods, light, dark and medium finishes, and even tables with metal and glass tops.
